2019 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012

Description

Class VIII tilted hub doubling appears below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello on this twelfth documented doubled die reverse for the 2019 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel. Tilted hub doubling — Class VIII in the Wexler classification system — results from the hub being angled slightly off-plane during the hubbing process, creating a rotational displacement that differs mechanically from the lateral shifts of more common doubling classes. Attributed by Evan Goldfarb under Wexler Variety ID 2019-P WDDR-012, this variety is accompanied by precise die markers: a small die dot to the right of the I in LIBERTY on the obverse, and on the reverse a die gouge in the upper right of the F in OF, a die dot above the T of CENTS, and a die break on the left edge of the building. The die break on the building's left edge is particularly useful as an at-a-glance attribution tool, since die breaks of that size are often visible without high magnification. The clustering of Class VIII doubling on the Monticello center door across multiple Jefferson Nickel dates suggests this area of the design is especially susceptible to tilted hub displacement.
