2019 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

Among modern Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverses, the 2019 DDR-002 stands out for its strong spread from a light clockwise hubbing that creates an extra building base above the TIC of MONTICELLO. Cataloged as UVC-1866 and DMR-003, three die stages document the progression. Stage A is an unconfirmed early die state. Stage B, at early-to-mid die state, features a die depression in the field west of the Monticello building on the reverse, with the obverse also at EMDS. Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The extra building base above MONTICELLO is one of the more visually accessible forms of Jefferson Nickel reverse doubling, as the architectural baseline provides a crisp reference against which the secondary impression is easily measured. The clockwise rotational mechanism distinguishes this variety from the more common Class II or Class VI types seen on other Jefferson Nickel DDRs. Collectors examining 2019-P nickels should look for the ghostly secondary base hovering above the lettering.
