CU-25c-2018P-01(CI) Rim Cud

Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins with the date notation 09/30/2019 and no additional cross-references, the CU-25c-2018P-01(CI) is a rim cud variety found on the 2018-P Cumberland Island National Seashore Quarter from the America the Beautiful series. This is the first documented cud (designated 01) for this date-mint-design combination, predating the CU-25c-2018P-03(CI) variant discovered later. A cud forms when a piece of the hardened steel die breaks away at the rim, creating a void that allows planchet metal to flow freely into the gap during striking, producing a raised featureless blob on the finished coin. The ATB Quarter is struck in cupronickel-clad composition at 5.67 grams and 24.3 mm diameter. The Cumberland Island reverse design by Phebe Hemphill depicts a snowy egret on the Georgia barrier island's pristine shoreline. Cuds are classified differently from interior die breaks because their rim location means the broken die fragment has no surrounding die steel to contain it, often resulting in larger and more dramatic raised areas. The discovery date of September 2019 indicates the variety was found approximately one year after the 2018-dated quarters entered circulation, a typical discovery timeline for cud errors found through roll searching.
