2017 VDDR VDDR-001

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as VDDR-001 for the 2017 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, this doubled die reverse shows a light spread to the south producing an extra right roof on the central doorway of Monticello. While subtle, the doubling creates a recognizable architectural anomaly on Thomas Jefferson's Virginia plantation home, which has appeared on the nickel reverse since Felix Schlag's design was selected in 1938. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, this belongs to the modern Jefferson series that returned to Monticello in 2006 after the Westward Journey series. The die progressed through stages: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B showing a die chip left of the designer's initials and a depression outside the left building edge at mid-die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). As the first-listed VDDR for the 2017-P, this variety holds the primary catalog position for the date. The UVC and DMR codes have not yet been formally assigned, indicating the variety awaits full integration into the VarietyVista numbering system.
