2017 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
ErrorDescription
Displaying Class VIII tilted hub doubling, WDDR-004 of the 2017-P Jefferson Nickel shows the doubling effect below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door of Monticello above the steps. Class VIII tilted hub doubling occurs when the hub tilts during impression, creating displacement concentrated in the area where the tilt angle has the greatest effect. The Monticello door frame and steps are among the most finely detailed elements on the Jefferson Nickel reverse, making them sensitive indicators of hub displacement. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the right of Jefferson's left eye, providing a quick confirming diagnostic. The reverse carries a die dot in the field to the upper right of Monticello's dome. Felix Schlag's Jefferson Nickel design has featured Monticello on the reverse since 1938, and the architectural detail provides numerous reference points for detecting hub doubling. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at the Philadelphia Mint, this modern Jefferson Nickel documents Class VIII tilted hub doubling on the fine architectural details of Monticello's center doorway.
