2017 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Evan Goldfarb and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2017-P WDDR-008, this Jefferson Nickel carries the distinction of being listed among the "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties — a curated designation highlighting the most visually impressive and collectible doubled dies across the entire Jefferson Nickel series. The doubling is classified as Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling), where the working hub was angled relative to the working die during a secondary impression, creating displacement that varies in magnitude across the die face depending on each element's distance from the tilt axis. Very nice Class VIII doubling is visible above and below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate that serves as the reverse design. Obverse die markers include a die dot on the left side of Jefferson's forehead, while the reverse shows a die gouge on the lower left side of the E in AMERICA and a die dot to the upper left of the first S in STATES. The Jefferson Nickel's Return to Monticello design, reintroduced in 2006 after the 2004-2005 Westward Journey series, was redesigned by Jamie Franki for the obverse and Felix Schlag's original Monticello reverse was updated. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter, the 2017-P nickel offers a modern example of tilted hub doubling on Monticello's architectural elements, where the building's geometric door frames and windows provide clean reference lines that make the hub displacement particularly visible and measurable.
