2017 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Scott Beatty and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2017-P WDDR-006, this Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel displays Class VIII tilted hub doubling — a relatively uncommon mechanism where the working hub was angled during the die-sinking process rather than laterally displaced or rotated. The resulting doubling appears below the left side of the portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Jamie Franki and Phebe Hemphill's updated Monticello reverse, introduced in 2006 as part of the Return to Monticello design. Reverse die markers further confirm this working die: a die gouge passes through the lower portion of M of AMERICA, and a long die scratch extends from the second A of AMERICA to the upper right of FS, the designer's initials for Felix Schlag whose obverse portrait was retained. No significant obverse markers have been documented. The 2017-P Jefferson Nickel was struck in the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel composition at 5.00 grams on 21.2mm planchets. Collectors should examine the Monticello doorframe under 7x to 10x magnification, focusing on the area just below the lintel where the tilted hub impression creates a secondary contour below the primary frame line.
