2017 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
First in what would become one of the most prolific doubled die reverse sequences in the America the Beautiful quarter series, this 2017 Frederick Douglass National Historical Site quarter inaugurates a catalog of over thirty varieties from a single design. The reverse, sculpted by Thomas D. Rogers Sr., depicts Frederick Douglass seated at a writing desk with Cedar Hill rising in the background among the trees of Anacostia in Washington, D.C. This design commemorates the great abolitionist, orator, and statesman who escaped slavery to become one of the most influential voices of the nineteenth century. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2017-P 25c DC WDDR-001, the DC code designates the District of Columbia. As the first cataloged DDR for this issue, WDDR-001 holds special significance for specialists who collect by sequence number. The sheer number of DDR varieties eventually found on this quarter suggests systemic production conditions that promoted hub shifting during die preparation.
