2017 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012

Description

Exhibiting Class VIII tilted hub doubling, WDDR-012 on the 2017-P Jefferson Nickel shows the doubling below the door frame on the center door above the steps of the Monticello reverse. Class VIII tilted hub doubling occurs when the hub and die are misaligned at an angle during the impression process, producing spread that increases radially from a pivot point—in this case manifesting in the architectural detail of Thomas Jefferson's iconic home. Die markers on the obverse include a die dot above the B of LIBERTY. Reverse markers include a die dot at the lower left of the D of UNITED and a die gouge above the porch on the left side of the building. Philadelphia Mint regular strike. The Monticello reverse has been the standard Jefferson Nickel design since 1938 (except for the Westward Journey series of 2004-2005), and doubled dies on architectural elements of the building provide particularly interesting diagnostics because the geometric precision of the building's lines makes even subtle doubling visible under moderate magnification.
