Description
Class VIII tilted hub doubling produces one of the more subtle forms of die variety — a slight angular displacement that manifests as localized design separation rather than the uniform spread seen in Class I varieties. On the 2017 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-010, this doubling appears below the lower portion of the triangle above the center door on Monticello's facade, above the building's iconic steps. The reverse carries a diagnostic small die gouge between the I and C of AMERICA, while no significant obverse die markers have been noted. The Jefferson Nickel's Monticello reverse, designed by Felix Schlag and used since 1938 with a brief interruption for the 2004–2005 Westward Journey designs, provides a complex architectural subject where even minor hub displacement can create detectable doubled elements in the building's geometric features. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub during the hubbing process, creating characteristically localized separation.
