Description

Cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 2016-P 25¢ SC WDDR-003, this doubled die reverse on the 2016 Fort Moultrie National Park Quarter represents the third documented reverse doubling from the Philadelphia Mint for this design. Fort Moultrie was the 33rd release in the America the Beautiful series, honoring the South Carolina site that witnessed pivotal military engagements from the Revolutionary War through both World Wars. The reverse contains fine architectural lines and lettering that serve as sensitive indicators of hub misalignment during die manufacture. When a hub impresses a working die at a slightly different position on its second pass, the resulting doubled impression creates extra metal along design edges detectable under moderate magnification. Three documented DDRs for a single ATB quarter is within the normal range observed across the program's 56 designs, as each required reverse dies manufactured through the same hubbing process. The Wexler sequential numbering allows collectors and dealers to reference each variety precisely.
