2015 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-009

Description

Ninth cataloged doubled die reverse for a 2015 America the Beautiful Quarter, DDR-009 exhibits medium spread in the southeast direction visible as extra blades of grass in the reverse design. VarietyVista assigned die markers UVC-2265 and DMR-010, with three documented die stages: Stage A with both reverse and obverse in Early Die State (EDS), Stage B in MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C in LDS (unconfirmed). Doubled die reverses form when a hub slightly shifts position between successive impressions during die manufacture, imprinting a secondary image offset from the primary design. The "medium spread Southeast" classification indicates the duplicate image is displaced both downward and to the right at a moderate degree visible under standard magnification. Blades of grass are particularly sensitive indicators of hub doubling because their fine parallel lines amplify even slight misalignment into clearly visible secondary outlines. The America the Beautiful Quarters program ran from 2010 through 2021, producing five designs per year at both Philadelphia and Denver, and the 2015 issues honored Homestead National Monument, Kisatchie National Forest, Blue Ridge Parkway, Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, and Saratoga National Historical Park. The nature-themed designs with detailed vegetation provided ideal canvas for detecting doubled die varieties.
