Rim cuds form when a section of die metal at the rim fractures and separates, leaving a void that fills with metal during striking to create a raised blob extending from the coin's edge into the design field. The Kisatchie Quarter, part of the America the Beautiful program, depicts a great blue heron amid the longleaf pines of the Kisatchie National Forest.
