Description

Struck at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the America the Beautiful quarter series, this doubled die reverse appears on the 2015 Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge quarter honoring Delaware's premier birding destination along the Delaware Bay. The reverse depicts a great blue heron standing among wetland grasses, capturing the refuge's role as critical habitat along the Atlantic Flyway for migratory shorebirds. Hub misalignment during die preparation created the doubled die reverse characteristics cataloged here. Cross-referenced as CONECA 11-R-VIII and attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2015-P 25c DE WDDR-023, the CONECA classification of VIII indicates Class VIII tilted hub doubling, where the hub tilts slightly relative to the die during impression. Twenty-three documented doubled die reverses for this single quarter design reflects high production volumes and an active community of variety hunters. Bombay Hook was the third of five 2015 ATB quarter designs, and the series has proven particularly productive for doubled die discoveries.
