Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-043 with die marker reference UVC-2142 and die marker reverse DMR-044, this doubled die reverse variety was struck on a 2015 America the Beautiful quarter. The America the Beautiful quarter program, which ran from 2010 through 2021, produced coins in a copper-nickel clad composition weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter and a reeded edge. The doubling on DDR-043 manifests as a light spread to the northeast visible in window L2 of the reverse design, a subtle but genuine hub doubling event on one of the architectural elements depicted on the reverse. VarietyVista's die stage documentation tracks three confirmed states of this die pair. Stage A represents the early die state, which remains unconfirmed. Stage B is an early-to-mid die state identified by a depression along the upper left roof and a corresponding depression along the upper right roof on the reverse, while the obverse shows early-to-mid die state characteristics as well. Stage C represents the late die state, also unconfirmed. Die state progression is a critical tool for understanding how a die's characteristics change over its working life, as repeated high-pressure strikes cause metal flow, stress fractures, and surface deterioration that alter the appearance of both the primary design elements and any die markers. The depressions along the roofline noted in Stage B likely represent areas where the die steel began to sink under pressure, creating slightly raised areas on struck coins. Modern America the Beautiful quarters, despite being produced with advanced die manufacturing technology including single-squeeze hubbing, still occasionally exhibit detectable doubled die varieties, though they tend to be subtler than those found on coins produced with the older multi-squeeze hubbing process used before the mid-1990s.
