2015 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003

Description

Capturing the natural landscape of Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Delaware, this 2015 ATB Quarter's reverse features a great blue heron in a tidal marsh — and DDR-003 manifests as medium spread in the southeast direction creating extra blades of grass in the foreground vegetation. The grass detail proved susceptible to visible doubling, as the fine parallel lines of individual blades readily reveal secondary impressions when hub alignment shifts. The resulting "extra grass" diagnostic is both memorable and diagnostically clear under magnification. Three die stages are documented under catalog codes UVC-2230 and DMR-002. Stage A records both the reverse and obverse in early die state, confirming the extra grass blades were present from the die's initial production. Stages B and C at mid and late die state remain unconfirmed. Cataloged by VarietyVista, this Philadelphia Mint copper-nickel clad quarter is part of the America the Beautiful series that featured national parks and sites from 2010 through 2021. Designed by Phebe Hemphill, the Bombay Hook reverse translates the refuge's coastal wetland ecology into fine vegetation detail responsive to hub displacement.
