2014 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-009

Description

The Roosevelt Dime series has accumulated an extensive catalog of doubled die varieties since its introduction in 1946, spanning the original silver composition through the clad transition of 1965 and into the modern era. WDDR-009 from the 2014 Philadelphia Mint continues this documentation tradition. Doubled die reverses arise during the die manufacturing process when a working die receives a second hub impression that is slightly offset from the first, creating a permanent doubled image in the die that transfers to every coin it strikes. Sinnock's reverse composition places the torch at the center with E PLURIBUS UNUM arcing above and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery — each of these elements can carry evidence of the secondary impression. The sheer volume of Roosevelt Dimes produced at Philadelphia each year means that multiple working dies are needed, increasing the probability that at least some will exhibit detectable hub doubling. The Wexler Team attributed this variety and assigned it Wexler Variety ID 2014-P 10¢ WDDR-009.
