Description

Designated CU-1C-2014-01, this is the first cataloged cud variety for the 2014 Philadelphia Lincoln Shield Cent. A cud forms when a portion of a coining die fractures at the rim and the broken piece falls away entirely, leaving a void in the die face. Every subsequent strike from that damaged die produces a coin with a raised, featureless lump of metal where the missing die fragment once shaped the design. The size and location of a cud depend on exactly how the die steel cracked — some cuds are small crescents barely visible without magnification, while others consume significant portions of the legend, date, or portrait. Modern zinc-core cents like the 2014 Shield issue use copper-plated zinc planchets that are softer than the solid bronze composition of earlier eras, which can affect how crisply the cud's boundaries appear on the struck coin.
