2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
Submitted by Daniel Ksycki and holding the primary catalog position for the 2013-P Perry's Victory Quarter, WDDR-001 shows doubling on the outside of Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry's coat, specifically the portion hanging to the left of his upper right leg. The Wexler Team designation 2013-P 25c OH WDDR-001 identifies this as an Ohio issue within the America the Beautiful Quarter program, commemorating Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial at Put-in-Bay. No significant die markers have been noted on either the obverse or reverse, and no external cross-references exist beyond the Wexler listing. The coat detail where the doubling appears is a fabric fold rendered in sculptural relief by the reverse designer, and the outside edge of this fold provides a clean linear reference against which the secondary hub impression creates a visible shadow or offset line. Perry's Victory was the second 2013 ATB release, following White Mountain (New Hampshire), and the reverse depicts Perry standing in a small boat during the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, making 2013 the bicentennial year of the battle — a historically resonant production year for the coin. The doubling's location on a figurative element (Perry's coat) rather than on lettering or geometric design elements makes it somewhat unusual, as many DDR varieties are most readily detected on inscriptions where the contrast between letter edges and fields is highest. Philadelphia Mint production of the 2013 OH quarter generated the working dies from which this WDDR-001 event was captured, and its first-position catalog number indicates it was either the most prominent or earliest-discovered DDR for this design.
