2013P-1DER-009T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Vivien Bullard, the 2013P-1DER-009T is a trail die reverse variety on the Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent. Trail die reverse varieties retain faint vestiges of a prior hub impression on the working die, producing subtle secondary design traces on the finished coin. Documented at Stage B, the obverse is at mid-die-state with a die crack visible in the 0 digit of the date. The reverse is also at MDS, displaying a die chip in the left upper edge of the shield above the PL of PLURIBUS. The die crack in the date numeral 0 provides a readily locatable obverse diagnostic, while the die chip above PL on the shield offers a reverse confirmation point. The shield design of modern Lincoln Cents, with its horizontal and vertical line patterns, creates a detailed background that can accentuate trail die remnants for collectors examining specimens under magnification.
