2013 Typical Die Clash TDC-1C-2013-01

Description

Documented by MadDieClashes and in the collection of Joe Koelling, TDC-1c-2013-01 records a typical die clash on a 2013 Lincoln Shield Cent where both dies contacted each other without a planchet between them, each transferring design elements onto the opposing die surface. On the obverse die, the impact transferred rays from the Union Shield reverse and a partial impression of the word UNUM, which appear as raised marks clashed into the obverse field behind and around Lincoln's portrait. On the reverse die, the clash transferred parts of Lincoln's back and the underside of his nose, visible as faint raised impressions on the shield reverse surface. This bidirectional transfer is the hallmark of a typical die clash — both dies simultaneously receive mirror-image impressions from the opposing die's design during the unprotected contact. An additional note reveals that this particular cent also exhibits trail die characteristics, cross-referenced as 2013P-1DER-005T, making this a dual-variety specimen where a die clash and a trail die effect coexist on the same coin or die pair. The 2013 Lincoln Shield Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc (2.5 grams, 19.05 mm diameter), with the Lyndall Bass Union Shield reverse and the familiar Victor David Brenner Lincoln portrait obverse. The combination of typical die clash features with trail die characteristics on the same die pair provides an unusually rich window into the mechanical events that occurred during this particular die's production service.
