Description

Honoring the Baltimore harbor fortification where the British bombardment of September 1814 inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that became The Star-Spangled Banner, the Fort McHenry National Monument quarter carries this DDR-003 with medium spread to the east on the lower flag strips and the two vertical bomb trails on the right side of the reverse. The quarter's depiction of the flag flying defiantly over the fort amid bursting bombs makes the doubled elements thematically resonant: flag strips symbolizing national resilience and bomb trails representing the British attack both carry visible secondary impressions from hub displacement. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-2216 and DMR-004, the eastward spread translates the mechanical error of hub misalignment into a doubling effect on imagery already charged with historical symbolism. Fort McHenry was part of the 2013 release group in the America the Beautiful quarter program, and its detailed reverse — featuring the flag, fort walls, and aerial bomb bursts — provided ample relief elements for die variety researchers to examine for signs of hub displacement.
