2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Doubling on the pyrotechnic imagery that defines the Fort McHenry National Park Quarter reverse, WDDR-002 on the 2013-P issue shows spread north on the right half of spray from both firework bursts and the left underside of the flag. The firework and flag doubling sits within one of the more visually complex reverse designs in the America the Beautiful series — Fort McHenry's connection to "The Star-Spangled Banner" is depicted through a nighttime bombardment scene with bursting rockets illuminating the flag over the fort. No significant die markers have been documented on either the obverse or reverse beyond the doubling pattern itself. CONECA classifies this variety as 7-R-VIII. Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, withstood the British naval bombardment of September 13-14, 1814, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write the poem that became the national anthem. The northward spread on the firework spray creates a shelf-like effect on the upward-radiating burst lines, while the flag underside displacement is subtler and requires magnification to confirm.
