2013 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Cataloged as the first doubled die reverse for the 2013 Fort McHenry National Park quarter, DDR-001 displays strong spread on the lower second bomb trail from the right — a design element depicting the "bombs bursting in air" from Francis Scott Key's observation of the British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. The West-direction spread pushes the secondary image of the bomb trail leftward from the primary, and the strong classification means the doubling is plainly visible under moderate magnification without requiring extreme loupe power. As DDR-001, this is the primary doubled die reverse listing for the Fort McHenry issue, typically indicating the strongest or earliest-discovered variety. Fort McHenry, located in Baltimore Harbor, inspired "The Star-Spangled Banner" and the quarter's reverse design captures the dramatic nighttime bombardment scene. Die stage documentation spans Early Die State through Late Die State. Philadelphia struck millions of these America the Beautiful quarters in 2013, but examples carrying this specific die's strong bomb-trail doubling represent a small fraction of the total production.
