2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2013-P 25c MD WDDR-011, this doubled die reverse on the 2013 Philadelphia Mint America the Beautiful Quarter features strong extra thickness visible on the spray emanating from both firework bursts and on the left and right sides of the three windows directly above the arch — design elements specific to the Fort McHenry National Monument reverse. The Fort McHenry quarter commemorates the Baltimore harbor fort where Francis Scott Key witnessed the British bombardment in 1814 that inspired "The Star-Spangled Banner," and the reverse design by Joseph Menna depicts the fort with a flag flying above and fireworks celebrating the successful defense. A small die gouge appearing as a dot inside the right curve of the C in AMERICA on the obverse provides a secondary attribution marker, while no significant reverse die markers beyond the doubling itself have been noted. The "MD" in the classification indicates this may involve master die level doubling, which would mean the variety propagated across multiple working dies derived from the same master. The America the Beautiful Quarters program, running from 2010 through 2021, issued five unique reverse designs per year honoring national parks and sites across all fifty states, territories, and the District of Columbia. With 165 doubled die reverses documented on ATB Quarters, the program's high mintages and numerous reverse designs created abundant opportunities for hubbing anomalies. Collectors of the ATB series particularly value doubled dies that affect distinctive design elements like Fort McHenry's fireworks, where the extra thickness on the spray lines is visually compelling.
