Description

Documented as 2013P-25DER-01, this trail die reverse variety appears on the 2013 Philadelphia Mount Rushmore National Park Quarter from the America the Beautiful series. The variety was discovered by George C. Goddard, who found the specimen in a U.S. Mint set. At Stage A in early die state, neither the obverse nor reverse shows notable die markers—a common characteristic of varieties caught very early in a die's production life before wear, cracks, or gouges have developed. Trail die varieties result from progressive die deterioration that leaves raised, trail-like distortions extending from design elements on struck coins. The Mount Rushmore quarter features the carved presidential portraits of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln on its reverse, a design rich in fine detail where trail die effects can appear along the sculptured faces. Discovery in a Mint set is significant because these government-packaged products draw from specific production runs, potentially helping researchers narrow down which die pairs and production windows generated the variety. The early die state suggests this trail die effect was present from the beginning of the die's service life.
