Hub doubling on Roosevelt Dimes is produced during the die manufacturing process when the hub — the master tool carrying the coin's design in positive relief — imparts multiple impressions to the working die with slight displacement between impressions. The result is a die that carries overlapping design elements, and every coin struck from that die will show the same doubling. This mechanical origin distinguishes doubled dies from machine doubling, which is a strike artifact of no numismatic premium.
