2011 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Sharing the same WDDR-002 die variety as its Position B counterpart, this 2011 Philadelphia Presidential Dollar honoring Andrew Johnson carries Position A edge lettering — meaning when the obverse faces up, the incused edge text appears inverted relative to the portrait. The doubling manifests on the right arm just above the top fold in the sleeve on the Statue of Liberty reverse, created when successive hub impressions failed to align precisely during die manufacturing. Because the edge lettering orientation is applied in a separate striking operation from the obverse and reverse, the same doubled die reverse can appear on coins with either Position A or Position B edges. Obverse diagnostics include a small die gouge between the upper D in GOD and the upper W in WE, and the reverse shows a small die gouge just below the top serif of the E in UNITED. Discovered by Andrew Miller and attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2011-P $1 AJ WDDR-002, this Position A specimen enables collectors to pursue both edge orientations for a single die variety, adding an extra dimension to Presidential Dollar variety collecting.
