2011P-5DER-001T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Tanaka (Mikee) Davis, this 2011 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel exhibits trail die markers on the reverse. Trail dies are a distinctive form of die variety created when a working die slides across the surface of another die or a hub during the manufacturing process, leaving elongated or streaked impressions that transfer to struck coins as faint raised lines or displaced design elements. This specimen is documented in Stage C at late die state. The obverse shows a small die dot to the right of the base of the first 1 in the date and a small die gouge under the U of TRUST. On the reverse, a small die dot appears in the field to the left of and under the E in the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, accompanied by a die gouge under the C of AMERICA. The late die state indicators on both sides confirm this is a well-used die pair, and the combination of trail die characteristics with the various die dots and gouges provides multiple diagnostic points for confirming the attribution. • Stage “C“, obverse is LDS – a small die dot can be seen to the right of the base of the first 1 digit in the date. A small die gouge is sen under the U of TRUST.
• Reverse is LDS – a small die dot is seen in the field to the left and under the E in the motto EPU. A die gouge is seen under the C of AMERICA.
