Description

Struck as a Position A example, the 2010 WDDR-003 is a doubled die reverse variety on the Millard Fillmore Presidential Dollar from the Philadelphia Mint. Position A indicates that the edge lettering reads right-side up when the coin is rotated on its horizontal axis, one of two orientations possible due to the unique edge-incused lettering process used for Presidential Dollars. Fillmore, the 13th president of the United States, served from 1850 to 1853 as the last Whig to hold the office, and is historically noted for signing the Compromise of 1850. The doubling on this variety resulted from a misalignment during die hubbing that produced visible extra thickness on reverse design elements. This variety carries the Wexler designation 2010-P $1 MF WDDR-003. Presidential Dollar varieties exist in both Position A and Position B orientations from the same die, and collectors tracking the full range of Fillmore dollar varieties should note the edge lettering orientation when attributing specimens.
