2010 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Sharing the same die variety as its Position B counterpart, this Position A specimen of the 2010 Millard Fillmore Presidential Dollar WDDR-002 carries edge lettering that reads normally when the reverse faces up — the orientation distinction that separates Position A from Position B in Presidential Dollar collecting. Both positions were produced from the same obverse and reverse die pair, meaning the doubling at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from the Statue of Liberty's head and her right arm is identical on both. What differs is the edge inscription application, performed in a separate striking operation after the obverse and reverse were impressed. Die markers match across both positions: a die gouge below the 5 in 1850 on the obverse, a gouge to the left of the left bust point, and a short nearly vertical die scratch between the tops of the T and E in STATES on the reverse. The Wexler Team cataloged this as 2010-P $1 MF WDDR-002. Fillmore, the last Whig president, signed the Compromise of 1850 during his tenure. Position A and B pairs from the same die variety are relatively uncommon finds in the Presidential Dollar series.
