2010P-1DER-011T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Lynn Morace, this 2010 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent trail die reverse exhibits light trails from MERI in AMERICA and slightly from the middle bar in the F of OF, offset at approximately 120 degrees. This variety is paired with obverse trail die 1DEO-010T, which shows trails from the bottom of the date 2010 offset at 200 degrees — making this a paired trail die coin with both sides carrying evidence of abnormal hub-to-die contact. Die markers at Stage A place both surfaces in early die state: the obverse shows very light abrasion marks in front of Lincoln's mouth, and the reverse carries a small group of gouges near the designer's initials LB. The 2010 date holds special significance as the first year of the Lincoln Shield reverse design by Lyndall Bass, replacing the Memorial reverse that had served since 1959. Struck in copper-plated zinc, the Shield Cent introduced a bold new reverse motif featuring thirteen stripes and the motto ONE CENT prominently displayed. Trail Dies attribution.
