2010P-1DER-008T Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Documented in the Trail Dies catalog and discovered by Albert Neils, the 2010P-1DER-008T is a trail die reverse variety found on the 2010 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent — the first year of Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse design that replaced the Lincoln Memorial motif in use since 1959. Trail die reverses display a faint secondary impression of the reverse design offset from the primary, produced during an unintended die-to-die contact event in the manufacturing or press setup process, and the Shield design's bold geometric lines and prominent ONE CENT inscription within the shield create a distinctive visual effect when doubled by a trail die impression. Die marker documentation identifies Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS) with no obverse markers noted, while the reverse at MDS shows a small die chip in the rim of the shield above the last U in PLURIBUS and die damage visible in the O of ONE — markers positioned within the shield design framework that aid in confirming this specific die. The Lincoln Shield Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait has been in continuous service since 1909, making 2010 the 101st year of the Lincoln Cent obverse. Albert Neils' discovery of this trail die reverse on the first-year Shield design contributes to the early documentation of die varieties on the new reverse type, establishing a baseline catalog that would continue to expand as the Trail Dies reference systematically recorded varieties across subsequent years of Shield Cent production.
