2010P-1DER-006T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Albert Neils, this 2010 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent exhibits a trail die reverse variety. A trail die occurs when impressions from a mismatched die are accidentally transferred onto a working die, leaving faint design traces from another denomination or design. In Stage B, the obverse is in Mid Die State with a small die gouge visible above the E of LIBERTY. The reverse is also in Mid Die State with a circular die dent passing through the N of ONE and a die crack in the C of CENT. The Lincoln Shield Cent, introduced in 2010 with Lyndall Bass's union shield reverse symbolizing Lincoln's preservation of the United States, replaced both the Memorial reverse and the 2009 Bicentennial designs. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at the Philadelphia Mint, the first-year Shield cents saw substantial production as collectors and the public alike examined the new design. Neils's discovery adds to the catalog of trail die varieties on the earliest Shield Cent issues, with the circular die dent through the N of ONE being a particularly distinctive marker for confirming this variety.
