2010P-1DER-004T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Found by Louis Schaeffer, this 2010 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent shows trail die characteristics during the inaugural year of the Shield Cent series. Cataloged by Trail Dies across two stages: Stage A at EMDS with no notable markers on either face; Stage B at LMDS with a die crack from Lincoln's ear to a point below the W of WE on the obverse and a small die dot between the T and A of STATES on the reverse. The ear-to-field crack traces a diagonal path from the portrait's detailed anatomy into the open field. Composed of copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19.05 mm, the 2010-P was the first year of Bass's Union Shield reverse, making this among the earliest trail die varieties for the new design. Trail die varieties occur when slight hubbing displacement leaves faint raised impressions near primary features.
