2010P-1DER-003T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Trail Die Reverse 003T on the 2010-P Lincoln Shield Cent is a Trail Dies attribution cataloged as 2010P-1DER-003T. A trail die impression occurs when a die strikes another die or surface without a planchet between them, leaving a ghosted transfer impression on the working die that subsequently prints faintly on struck coins. Two die stages document this variety. Stage A (EDS/obverse) and Stage A (EDS/reverse) show no die markers noted. Stage B (EMDS/obverse) develops a die dot above the E in LIBERTY. Stage B (EMDS/reverse) develops a die crack with an associated chip above the E of ERU in E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a die gouge appears adjacent to the middle arm of the E in EPU. The 2010-P Lincoln Shield Cent was the first year of the permanent Shield reverse design, which replaced the 2009 Bicentennial reverses. Trail die evidence on Shield cents is most visible in the flat field areas flanking the shield's vertical stripes, where the ghost impression transfers with least interference from design elements. The Stage B die crack with chip above ERU provides a confirming reverse marker when trail die characteristics have faded.
