Error
Description
Sharing the same trail die designation as the Position A variant, this Position B Philadelphia Mint Presidential Dollar honoring James K. Polk displays mushy trail lines on the TES of STATES, Liberty's torch, and the AME of AMERICA at an offset direction of 030 degrees. Found by Aisha Shahid. Die markers at Stage C: obverse at LDS with a die dent above the A of JAMES and field deterioration around the bust; reverse at LDS with no additional markers noted. Position B refers to the edge lettering orientation relative to the obverse design. Trail dies arise from partial contact between die faces during press operation. Struck in manganese brass clad over a copper core at 8.1 grams and 26.49 mm, the Polk dollar was the 11th issue in the Presidential Dollar series.
Die Markers
- Stage “C“, obverse is LDS – a die dent is seen above the A of JAMES. The field around the bust of Polk does show signs of deterioration.
