Description

Mushy trail lines appear on the TES of STATES, Liberty's torch, and the AME of AMERICA at an offset direction of 030 degrees on this Philadelphia Mint Presidential Dollar honoring James K. Polk (Position A). Found by Aisha Shahid. Trail die errors result from partial unintended contact between die faces during press operation. Die markers at Stage C: obverse at LDS with a die dent above the A of JAMES and field deterioration visible around the bust of Polk; reverse at LDS with no additional markers noted. The LDS classification for both dies indicates this trail die variety was produced late in the die's service life. Struck in manganese brass clad over a copper core at 8.1 grams and 26.49 mm, the 2009-P Polk dollar was part of the Presidential Dollar program launched in 2007.

Die Markers

  • Stage “C“, obverse is LDS – a die dent is seen above the A of JAMES. The field around the bust of Polk does show signs of deterioration.
  • Reverse is LDS – none noted.
