2009 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-013

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die identification UVC-2641 and DMR-016, this 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent DDR-013 displays a strong spread south manifesting as an extra thumb just above the index finger — a striking anatomical doubling on the young Abraham Lincoln figure depicted in the Birth and Early Childhood in Kentucky reverse design, where the southward hub displacement created a visible secondary thumb impression positioned above the primary hand. Four die stages chart the die's production life: Stage A at early die state (EDS), unconfirmed; Stage B at early-to-mid die state (EMDS) with a light die crack on the shoulder and a die crack on the forehead; Stage C at mid-die-state (MDS), unconfirmed; and Stage D at late die state (LDS), unconfirmed. The Stage B die cracks on the shoulder and forehead of the young Lincoln figure document progressive structural failure in high-relief portrait areas where the deep die recesses concentrate striking forces. The extra thumb diagnostic is among the more visually accessible doubled die features on Bicentennial Cents because the human hand anatomy provides an immediately recognizable reference against which the anomalous secondary digit is easily spotted. The 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent commemorated the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth with four rotating reverse designs representing different life periods. The Birth and Early Childhood reverse, designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz, depicts young Lincoln reading before a log cabin in Kentucky.
