Description

Displaying strong but weakly hubbed spread northward, DDR-010 on the 2009 Lincoln Formative Years cent manifests as an extra thumb and book spine on the reverse — elements tied to the depiction of young Lincoln absorbed in reading by firelight. VarietyVista assigns this variety UVC-2638 with die-marriage reference DMR-013. The "strong spread but weak hubbing" classification indicates that while the directional displacement is significant, the secondary hub impression transferred with less pressure than normal, producing spread that is broad but shallow in relief. Three die stages have been identified. Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in early die state, preserving the clearest expression of the extra thumb before die wear softens the secondary impression. Stage B reaches mid-die state, pending confirmation. Stage C represents late die state, also unconfirmed. The Formative Years reverse was one of four special designs issued in 2009 to mark the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth. Collectors pursuing the complete DDR catalog for this design will find DDR-010's extra thumb and book spine doubling among the more distinctive diagnostic signatures in the series.
