Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-2619 and DMR-007 across three recognized die stages, this 2009 Philadelphia Lincoln Cent doubled die reverse belongs to the Formative Years design — the second of four bicentennial reverses issued in 2009 to honor Lincoln's 200th birthday. Sculpted by Charles Vickers, the reverse depicts a young Lincoln seated on a log reading a book, symbolizing his self-education on the Indiana frontier. The doubling produces a very strong spread as an extra thumb just above the index finger, extending onto the book binding. This anatomical doubling on Lincoln's hand is a compelling diagnostic, as the small-scale figurative detail amplifies the visual impact of hub displacement. Three die stages track the die's service life from early to late states. The 2009 Bicentennial program generated substantial collector interest, and die variety researchers documented all four reverse designs thoroughly.
