2009 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Cross-referenced as Cherrypickers' FS-802 and documented by VarietyVista, the 2009 DDR-001 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent from the Early Childhood reverse design exhibits very strong doubling manifesting as an extra index finger just south of the thumb with an extra middle finger above the normal index finger — making this one of the most visually dramatic doubled die varieties in the entire 2009 Bicentennial series because the extra fingers create unmistakable anatomical anomalies on the young Lincoln figure seated on a log. Die markers UVC-2615 / DMR-003 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at EMDS with a strong die gouge running diagonally across the book pages, light die cracks northeast from the N of ONE and on both boots, a die crack from the bridge of the nose to the forehead, and a die chip in the hair; Stage C at MDS (unconfirmed); and Stage D at LDS (unconfirmed). The FS-802 Cherrypickers' designation confirms this as a major variety recognized as significant enough for inclusion in the definitive error and variety reference guide. The Lincoln Bicentennial Cent was designed by Desmond Stuart-Alexander for the Early Childhood reverse, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2009 in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The extra finger doubling on this variety has made it one of the most popular modern doubled dies among collectors, as the clear anatomical anomaly is both easy to explain to non-specialists and visually compelling — the presence of apparent extra fingers on the young Lincoln reading a book provides an immediately recognizable doubled die effect that requires no specialized knowledge to appreciate.
