Description

Part of the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial series — featuring four special reverse designs commemorating stages of Abraham Lincoln’s life — DDR-022 appears on the Early Childhood design depicting the Kentucky log cabin where Lincoln was born. This variety shows very strong spread directed East, producing partial log ends on logs 8, 9, 10, and 11 counted from the bottom of the cabin. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-2722 and DMR-016, three die stages have been documented. The eastward spread creating extra log ends is among the more dramatic doubled die effects on this reverse, because the horizontal log lines amplify even modest displacement into clearly visible secondary impressions. The 2009 Bicentennial cents were produced in four reverse types — Birth and Early Childhood, Formative Years, Professional Life, and Presidency — each struck at both Philadelphia and Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets. Strong doubled dies on the log cabin reverse are particularly sought after because the architectural detail provides multiple attribution points and the visual impact of partial extra logs is immediately apparent.
