Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with die tracking code UVC-2709 and die marker reference DMR-007, this 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent DDR-005 presents a light spread south creating an extra partial log end adjacent to log #10 from the bottom — a diagnostic feature referenced against the numbered log end identification system developed for the Birth and Early Childhood in Kentucky reverse design, which depicts a log cabin where the young Abraham Lincoln spent his formative years. The southward displacement direction means the secondary hub impression shifted downward relative to the primary, producing the extra partial log end as a ghost image below the original log position. Four documented die stages track the die's service life: Stage A is early die state (EDS), unconfirmed; Stage B reaches early-mid die state (EMDS) with a light die crack developing southeast from the RM (Richard Masters) designer's initials and a die crack appearing on Lincoln's forehead on the obverse; Stage C is mid-die-state (MDS), unconfirmed; Stage D is late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed. The forehead die crack in Stage B documents structural failure in one of the highest-relief areas of Brenner's portrait, where concentrated striking pressures accelerate fracture development. The 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent commemorated Lincoln's 200th birthday with four reverse designs. The Early Childhood reverse was designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz. Struck in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter, the bicentennial cents were produced in lower quantities than typical years. As the fifth cataloged DDR for this reverse design, DDR-005 documents the variety richness generated by the detailed log cabin imagery, where each log end provides a discrete reference point for locating and describing doubling manifestations.
