Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2009-P $1 John Tyler WDDR-001, this doubled die reverse variety appears on a 2009 Presidential dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Presidential dollar series, produced from 2007 onward, is composed of manganese brass (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel), weighing 8.1 grams with a 26.5 mm diameter and a plain edge bearing incuse inscriptions for the date, mintmark, and motto. The John Tyler dollar honored the 10th President of the United States, who served from 1841 to 1845 after assuming office upon the death of William Henry Harrison. The doubling on WDDR-001 is visible at the intersection of the 2nd ray clockwise from the head and the right arm of the Statue of Liberty on Don Everhart's reverse design featuring Liberty holding her torch and tablet. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running from the lower J to the O of JOHN and numerous die scratches running northeast from the R of TYLER. An additional die scratch runs from the lower 4 to the 1 in the date 1841. The reverse shows two parallel die scratches extending northeast from the lower right side of the 5th ray clockwise from the head. The WDDR-001 designation indicates this is the primary doubled die reverse variety for the 2009 John Tyler Presidential dollar, making it the first DDR cataloged for this specific issue. The Statue of Liberty reverse, used across all Presidential dollars, features radiating rays from Liberty's head that provide excellent reference points for detecting hub displacement, and the intersection of ray and arm elements where this doubling appears demonstrates how overlapping design features can amplify subtle hub misalignment into visually detectable doubling.
