CU-25c-2008P-01(OK) Rim Cud

Description

As the first documented rim cud for the 2008 Philadelphia Oklahoma State Quarter, CU-25c-2008P-01(OK) belongs to the final year of the original 50 State Quarters Program. Oklahoma's reverse features the Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher soaring over wildflowers with the state outline — a naturalistic composition that stands apart from the architectural themes chosen by many other states. A rim cud develops when a portion of the die edge fractures completely, separating from the die body and creating a raised blank mass on struck coins. The 2008 program year closed out the most ambitious circulating commemorative initiative in United States Mint history, with Oklahoma joined by New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii as the final five entries. Being the 01 designation means this was the inaugural cud discovery for this issue, establishing the first entry in what could become a longer census as additional specimens surface. Oklahoma was admitted as the forty-sixth state in 1907, and its century-plus anniversary roughly coincided with its appearance in the quarter program's concluding year.
