Description

Discovered by Aisha Shahid, this 2008 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent is a trail die reverse from the final year of Gasparro's Memorial design before the 2009 bicentennial reverses. At Stage “B,” the obverse is at MDS with no markers noted. The reverse at MDS shows a small die gouge to the right of the S in PLURIBUS above the Memorial roof, plus a die gouge to the left of the last A in AMERICA. These two reverse gouges — one near the motto and one near the country name — bracket the Memorial building as identification markers. Composed of copper-plated zinc weighing 2.5 grams at 19.05 mm diameter, trail die varieties from 2008 are among the last produced with Gasparro's iconic Memorial imagery that served since 1959. The discovery credit reflects the citizen-numismatist tradition driving trail die identification.

Die Markers

  • Stage “B “, obverse is MDS – none noted.
  • Reverse is MDS – a small die gouge is seen just to the right of the S in PLURIBUS just above the roof of the Memorial building. Another die gouge is seen just to the left of the last A in AMERICA.
