Description

Faint trail lines from the tops of the letters in EPU, the ES of STATES, the O in OF, and the AM of AMERICA at an offset direction of 300 degrees mark this Trail Dies-cataloged Lincoln Memorial Cent found by Louis Schaeffer. The northwest-trending 300-degree offset produces trail lines extending up and to the left from affected letters. Die markers at Stage A: obverse is EDS with two long die scratches under the word TRUST and diagonal scratches under Lincoln's chin; reverse is EDS with none noted. The EDS stage designation on both faces indicates this trail die was documented on the die pair while still in its earliest production phase. Struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.5 grams and 19.05 mm at Philadelphia during the final year of Gasparro's fifty-year Memorial reverse design before the 2009 Bicentennial transition.

Die Markers

  • Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – two long die scratches are under the word TRUST. Diagonal scratches are seen under Lincoln’s chin.
  • Reverse is EDS – none noted.
