2008P-1DER-002WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Jason Dick of Ohio with Stage B later found by Chuck Chichinski, this 2008 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits a trail die reverse. Trail dies are produced when a previously struck coin remains in the press and is impressed into the working die, transferring a ghost-like outline that then appears as a faint secondary impression on subsequent strikes. Two die states are documented. Stage A in early die state shows no obverse markers, but the reverse exhibits a die crack and die chips in the top of column one arching over into the cornice above bay one. Stage B at mid die state introduces a die clash below Lincoln's ear on the obverse and a die chip in column two on the reverse. The progression from clean obverse to clashed obverse helps collectors determine their specimen's die state. Trail die varieties on Lincoln Memorial cents are cataloged by a dedicated specialist community tracking these faint transferred images.

• Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – none noted.
• Reveres is EDS – a die crack is seen along with die chips in the top of column1, arching over into the cornice above bay 1.
• Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – a die clash is seen below Lincoln’s ear.
• Reverse is MDS – a die chip is seen in column 2.
