2008P(HI)-25DER-006T Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Documented in the Trail Dies catalog and discovered by Steven Bernatowicz, the 2008P(HI)-25DER-006T is a trail die reverse variety found on the 2008 Philadelphia Mint Hawaii State Quarter — the final issue in the 50 State Quarters Program. Trail dies on State Quarters are particularly interesting because each of the 50 unique reverse designs creates different visual results when a secondary design impression appears offset from the primary, and Hawaii's reverse design featuring King Kamehameha I, the state outline, and the state motto offers a distinctive canvas for trail die effects. Die marker documentation identifies Stage C at late die state (LDS) with the obverse showing a die crack on the lower left bottom of Washington's bust — a structural failure developing in the high-relief portrait zone. The reverse at LDS displays a die gouge below Kauai and to the left of Oahu within the Hawaiian islands outline, positioning this marker within the state map element of the design. The Hawaii State Quarter reverse, designed by Don Everhart, depicts King Kamehameha I with the Hawaiian Islands in the background and the inscription "Ua Mau ke Ea o ka Aina i ka Pono" (The Life of the Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness). Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (8.33% nickel, 91.67% copper) weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter, the 2008-P Hawaii quarter completed the 10-year State Quarters series. Steven Bernatowicz's discovery contributes to the comprehensive documentation of trail die events across the entire State Quarters Program, cataloging these specialized varieties for future collectors and researchers.
